China's Leading Domestic Handset Manufacturer Launches its D220 Handset, Offering Advanced Multimedia Technology from Broadcom

BARCELONA, Spain, 3GSM World Congress, Feb 13, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Broadcom® CellAirity&S482; multimedia technology has been designed into a new multimedia handset from mobile device maker Ningbo Bird Co., Ltd. (China's leading manufacturer of mobile phones). The new BIRD handset, the Model D220, provides many advanced multimedia features and is now available in China -- the world's largest mobile phone market.

BIRD's new D220 GPRS phone represents a new generation of cost-effective multimedia handsets featuring a 1.3 Megapixel camera, MPEG-4 video recording and playback, a large TFT color screen with a secondary color screen and MP3 music playback. Other advanced features include an external memory card, USB storage functionality, PC-Link connectivity and JAVA compatibility. The D220 handset is based on the Broadcom CellAirity mobile multimedia platform and the Broadcom BCM2132 single-chip baseband processor, Broadcom's second generation solution with built-in support for advanced multimedia functionality.

"BIRD continues to play a leadership role in introducing advanced multimedia features in its handsets for the Chinese market," said Victor Hu, Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Mobile Communications Business Unit. "The adoption of Broadcom CellAirity technology for the D220 phone is another demonstration of how our mobile products enable our partners to remain at the cutting edge of handset features."

Broadcom's BCM2132 EDGE/GPRS/GSM baseband processor offers a high level of system integration, performance and features for next generation wireless multimedia handsets and data modules. The BCM2132 integrates all analog and digital EDGE/GPRS/GSM baseband processing functions on a single CMOS chip, as well as on-board interface functions and drivers to enable auxiliary components such as microphone, speaker and SIM to connect directly to the chip. Broadcom also offers comprehensive EDGE/GPRS/GSM system design based upon the BCM2132 to minimize time-to-market for handset developers.

Broadcom mobile technology has been adopted by several other top Chinese handset manufacturers, as well as by BIRD. Offering a range of advanced cellular baseband products that support multiple cellular technologies (including EDGE and WCDMA), Broadcom features a broad portfolio of converged communications products to enable next generation devices that integrate Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® functionalities, personal multimedia players, and digital video, still image capture and mobile TV capabilities.

Availability

The BCM2132 GPRS multimedia processor is shipping in production quantities. The D220 handset is available today in the China market and will be shown at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 13 to 16, 2006. Visit Broadcom's booth in the Fira de Barcelona in Hall 1, stand C78.
